How refrigerator removal works in Baltimore

1 · Photograph the unit

Snap the fridge or freezer where it stands — the kitchen, the basement, the second-floor dorm room. The exact flat price comes back in seconds, freon recovery included.

2 · Pick a window

Choose a slot — same-day runs city-wide. For a Silo Point, Inner Harbor, or Harbor East high-rise we file the COI and reserve the freight elevator before we arrive.

3 · We recover & haul

The crew recovers the refrigerant, carries the unit up from the basement and out to the alley, and sends the steel to scrap. Nothing for you to disconnect or drag.

How much does refrigerator removal cost in Baltimore?

Flat, photo-quoted, and all-in: the freon recovery, the carry-out, and the metal recycling are inside the number before a truck moves. For context, Homeyou puts a typical Baltimore junk-removal job around $243–$254 (2026), and the national franchises usually bill $100–$350+ for a single fridge once their minimum, a "refrigerant fee," and an estimate visit are added. Here's the ladder:

UnitFlat price
Refrigerator (full-size)$164
Large / commercial refrigerator$164
Mini fridge / dorm fridge$115
Chest freezer$146
Upright freezer$149
Wine cooler (small / large)$111–$156
Ice maker$115

$75 minimum. Freon recovery, the basement carry, and freight elevators are included — never a surcharge. Clearing a whole kitchen or a rental turnover? Add the stove, dishwasher, and washer to the same photo and we price the lot — see the full appliance removal page. No Maryland sales tax on the service.

Does Baltimore City pick up refrigerators and freezers?

Technically yes — fridges and freezers are on the eligible list for Baltimore City DPW's bulk-trash program — but two catches turn "free" into a chore most people give up on. The first is the cap that governs everything: three items a month, on one scheduled Saturday, curbside, booked through 311 at least four days out. One fridge and one freezer already eat two of your three slots for the month.

The second catch is specific to anything that cools. A refrigerator or freezer holds refrigerant, and federal EPA rules require that the freon be professionally recovered and the unit tagged before it can be collected or scrapped — the city won't haul an untagged fridge, and venting it yourself is illegal. So the "free" route really means arranging certified recovery first, then dragging a 250-pound box up from a basement to a curb your rowhouse doesn't have. We fold all of it into one visit: we recover the freon, carry the unit up from the basement or kitchen to the alley, and recycle the steel — same day, one flat price.

What we take

  • Full-size refrigerators — top-freezer, side-by-side, French-door, and the big commercial units from a bar or restaurant.
  • Mini & dorm fridges — the ones that fill student apartments and offices; $115 flat, or free-riding a bigger clear.
  • Freezers — chest and upright deep-freezers, garage and basement "beer fridges," and defunct kegerators.
  • Wine coolers & ice makers — built-in and freestanding wine fridges, beverage centers, and standalone ice machines.
  • Refrigerant handled on all of it — every cooling unit gets EPA-certified freon recovery, no exceptions and no extra fee.

What happens to your refrigerator after pickup

A refrigerator is one of the easiest big things to keep out of the landfill because it's mostly steel, copper, and aluminum. Once the refrigerant is safely recovered, the unit goes to scrap-metal recycling, where the metals are recovered and put back to work; only the genuinely non-recyclable remainder is tipped at the Quarantine Road Landfill or the Northwest Transfer Station. Because Baltimore's per-load disposal cost is low and predictable, we can bake the responsible routing into the flat price instead of surprising you with a dump fee at the door — and the same goes for a still-working unit we can point toward a reuse channel.

Basement freezers, rowhouse kitchens, and dorm mini fridges

The fridge is almost never sitting by an open door. The chest freezer is at the bottom of a narrow rowhouse basement stair with no driveway to roll a hand truck out to. The dead kitchen fridge in Federal Hill or Highlandtown opens straight onto the sidewalk with a marble step in the way. The mini fridge is on the third floor of a Charles Village student apartment during the May 14 Hopkins move-out crush. Or it's a Locust Point Silo Point or Harbor East condo where nothing leaves the building without a Certificate of Insurance on file and the freight elevator reserved. Every one of those is the part a curbside program hands back to you. We take the whole chain: the freon recovery, the carry up the basement stairs or down from a walk-up, the COI and freight-elevator booking, and the metal recycling — no stair fee, no heavy-item surcharge.

When people call us for refrigerator removal

  • A new fridge is being delivered — the store won't take the old one, or only for a fee, and it has to be gone first.
  • A dead or leaking unit — a fridge that quit and defrosted across the floor, or a basement freezer that spoiled and reeks.
  • Student move-out — the mini fridge (and mattress and futon) after a Hopkins, Towson, UMBC, or Morgan State lease ends.
  • A rental turnover or rowhouse rehab — a landlord or investor clearing a stripped kitchen between tenants.
  • A move-out or estate — a whole Roland Park or Mount Washington kitchen and basement cleared at once.

Why Baltimore chooses JunkRabbit for refrigerator removal

  • Freon done right — EPA-certified refrigerant recovery on every fridge and freezer, included, with no separate arrangement or "refrigerant fee."

  • Recycled & buildings handled — steel to scrap, COI on file, freight elevators booked, and Español across the southeast.

Flat, photo-quoted: full-size fridge $164, large/commercial $183, mini fridge $115, chest freezer $146, upright freezer $149, wine cooler $111–$156, ice maker $115. $75 minimum. Freon recovery, the carry-out, and metal recycling are all in the number.

Does Baltimore City pick up refrigerators and freezers?

They're eligible, but each counts toward the 3-item monthly cap (one Saturday, curbside, via 311 four days out), and the freon must be professionally recovered and the unit tagged first. We do the recovery and carry it up from the basement same-day.

Do you recover the freon?

Yes — every fridge and freezer gets EPA-certified refrigerant recovery inside the flat price. You don't arrange it separately or prove it was done.

Can you grab a mini fridge during student move-out?

Yes — a mini fridge is $115 flat, and Hopkins, Towson, UMBC, MICA, and Morgan State move-out in May and late August is one of our busiest windows. On its own or with the mattress and furniture in one clear.

Can you do it same-day, and do you speak Spanish?

Same-day is usually open — send a photo for the flat price. Y sí, hablamos español en Upper Fells Point, Highlandtown, Fells Point y Dundalk; retiramos refrigeradores y congeladores.
