Mattress recycling in Baltimore: what it costs and what actually gets recycled

The short answer

Mattresses are genuinely recyclable. Whether yours gets recycled depends on two things: whether a facility within reach accepts them, and what condition it is in.

What is actually inside

A conventional innerspring mattress separates into four useful streams:

• Steel. The spring unit, and it is the most valuable part by a distance. It goes into scrap steel.
• Foam. Polyurethane foam is shredded and commonly reprocessed into carpet underlay.
• Fiber and felt. Padding layers, which have industrial uses.
• Timber. Mainly from the box spring, where the frame is a simple wooden ladder under a fabric cover. It chips for mulch or fuel.

Memory foam and latex mattresses have no spring unit, so the steel stream disappears and the value proposition changes. All-foam beds are still processable where a facility takes them, but they are worth less at the gate.

The box spring is the easiest piece of the whole set to recycle, which surprises people, because it is the hardest piece to get down a Baltimore staircase.

Condition decides it

This is the part nobody mentions, and it is the deciding factor in this city more than in most.

A recycling facility will reject a mattress that is soaked, mold-damaged or infested, because the material cannot be separated safely or usefully. Baltimore summers are humid, the harbor-adjacent neighborhoods more so, and a mattress that has spent two years in a Canton or Locust Point cellar has frequently absorbed enough moisture to be finished as a recyclable.

The same goes for the mattress that sat in the alley for a week waiting for a collection that was never scheduled. Rain does in three days what the landfill was going to do anyway.

The practical lesson: if you want yours recycled, move it while it is dry and indoors. That is a scheduling decision, not a spending one.

Is there free recycling in Maryland?

Some states run statewide mattress stewardship programs, funded by a small fee collected when you buy a new mattress, which pay for free drop-off recycling. Other states have no such program, in which case a mattress is handled like any other bulky item and a facility charges a gate rate.

Check the current position for Maryland before you plan around a free drop-off, because the whole DIY recycling plan depends on that answer. Also check whether the program covering your address, city or county, treats mattresses differently from general bulk.

Do not rely on what a retailer's salesperson told you or what applied three years ago. Both change.

The real cost of driving it yourself

Say you find a facility that takes mattresses. The cost of that trip is not the gate rate.

• A vehicle that fits it. A queen does not go in a sedan and it is not going on a roof rack down I-83 in any responsible way. So that is a rental, plus mileage, plus fuel.
• The gate rate itself, whatever it currently is.
• Two people, because the mattress is coming down a rowhouse staircase before it goes anywhere.
• An afternoon. Load, drive out, queue, unload, drive back, return the vehicle.

Against $103 for a queen collected from your third-floor bedroom in a two-hour window, the arithmetic usually goes one way. And the carry down the stairs, which is the genuinely hard part, is included rather than still ahead of you.

The box spring, again

Worth its own paragraph because it is the single most common reason a Baltimore mattress removal stalls.

A mattress flexes and can be persuaded around a winder turn. A box spring is a rigid timber frame and cannot. In a lot of this city's rowhouses yours was split in half to get it up there in the first place, and you may not know because the fabric cover hides the cut.

If it was not split, the crew splits it in the room rather than damaging your plaster fighting it round the corner. It is $92 either way, and it remains the most recyclable piece in the set.

What we do with it

Mattresses go to recycling where a facility will take them and the condition allows. Where it does not, they go to disposal.

We do not charge differently for the two outcomes, and we are not going to pretend every mattress in Baltimore ends up recycled, because a soaked one from a damp cellar does not. What we will do is move it while it is dry, which is the part that actually changes the outcome.

How to give yours the best chance

• Book before it goes outside. Not after it has spent a weekend in the yard.
• Keep it dry. If it must wait, keep it indoors, not on the back pad.
• Do not set it out early for a collection. An unscheduled mattress in the alley is a dumping problem and a ruined recyclable at the same time.
• Bag it if it is infested, in the room, and tell us when you book so it is routed correctly.
