Hampden
The old mill town turned Charm City's quirkiest quarter — formstone rows built for the Jones Falls millhands, HonFest on the sidewalks, and the 34th-Street lights every December. Behind the kitsch it's a working neighborhood of narrow rowhouses with full basements and no driveway, plus a full block of vintage and retail on The Avenue. We handle both: the basement cleanout carried up the stairs, and the shop or estate clear-out on W 36th. One flat photo-quoted price, the carry included.
Mill-town rows with full basements — and no driveway
Hampden (21211) grew up around the Jones Falls cotton mills, and the housing still shows it: tight, two-story formstone rowhouses built cheek-by-jowl for mill workers, front doors right on the sidewalk, no driveway and no curb setback, and a full basement under nearly every one. That's where the accumulation lives — a generation of boxes, broken furniture, and damp storage at the bottom of a narrow interior staircase. It's exactly the job the national chains price with a per-flight stair fee and a heavy-item surcharge once they see the steps. We don't. We carry it up from the basement and out to the rear alley, or double-park on your residential permit block while we load, and the carry is already in the flat price.
Everything is photo-quoted before anyone shows up: one flat number that covers the labor, the carry, the truck, and the dump fee, with no Maryland sales tax on the service. Same-day pickup is usually available when a slot's open. Usable furniture goes to Goodwill of the Chesapeake, the Salvation Army, or the Habitat Chesapeake ReStore rather than straight to the landfill.
What we haul in Hampden
- Full-basement cleanouts — decades of damp storage carried up the narrow mill-row stairs and out to the alley, truck-fill priced.
- Rowhouse move-outs — whole-house clears on a lease or settlement timeline, couches and mattresses in one trip.
- Vintage & retail shop clear-outs — end-of-lease fixtures, shelving, display cases, and unsold stock on The Avenue.
- Estate & generational cleanouts — long-time family homes turned over, donation-routed and broom-clean.
- Single pieces — a sofa, a mattress, an old fridge, a bookshelf full of records — hauled the same day when we can.

Clearing out a shop on The Avenue
W 36th Street — The Avenue — is Hampden's retail spine, a run of vintage stores, antiques, and independent shops that turn over more than the rowhouses do. When a lease ends or a store downsizes, we handle the fixture and stock clear-out: leftover shelving and pegboard, glass display cases, racks, the back-room overflow, and the furniture nobody's buying. It's the same flat, photo-quoted truck-fill pricing as a house, scheduled around your hours so we're not loading in front of a Saturday crowd during HonFest or the lights season. Whatever's still usable we route to donation; the rest goes to the transfer station on our dime, not yours.
Common questions
There's no driveway and the basement stairs are steep — extra charge?
No. The narrow mill-row stairs and the no-curb block are the normal Hampden job, not an add-on. We carry it up and out to the alley or double-park to load, and it's all in the one flat price. No stair fee, no heavy-item fee.
Can you do it same-day?
Usually, when a slot's open. Send a photo, lock the flat price, and we'll give you the soonest window — often the same day for a couch, a mattress, or a small basement load.
What happens to the stuff?
Usable furniture and goods go to Goodwill of the Chesapeake, the Salvation Army, or the Habitat Chesapeake ReStore. The rest goes to a city transfer station. Disposal is already in your flat price.
Do you take appliances and electronics?
Yes — fridges (freon recovered and documented), washers, dryers, and TVs routed to e-waste. A refrigerator is $164; ask for a photo quote on the rest.

What Hampden customers say
"Cleared out the basement of our row off Chestnut — thirty years of my dad's stuff, all up those skinny stairs and out to the alley. No driveway, no stair fee, one fair flat price. They even double-parked so I didn't lose my permit spot."
"Closed my vintage shop on The Avenue and needed the fixtures, cases, and leftover stock gone before the next tenant. Photo quote, showed up early on a weekday so we weren't in the crowd, done in a couple hours."
"Quick couch and mattress haul before new tenants moved in. Flat price from a photo, gone the same afternoon, tidy. Easiest part of the whole turnover."
